Japan Alps & Nagano: 4 Days

Alpine villages, wild monkeys in hot springs, and the dramatic Kamikochi valley

Matsumoto → naganoUpdated Jun 2025

The Japan Alps straddle the centre of Honshu, forming a backbone of 3,000m peaks that separate the Pacific and Sea of Japan sides. Nagano Prefecture sits in the heart of this range and rewards visitors with mountain scenery, traditional post towns along the Nakasendo highway, and a culture that blends alpine adventure with deep Buddhist heritage. Summer (June–October) offers hiking and wildflowers; winter (December–March) is ski season and the famous snow-monkey season.

Notes

Practical tips

Things we wish someone had told us before we landed.

  • Two Great Seasons: Summer Hiking & Winter Snow

Summer (late June–October): Kamikochi open, alpine wildflowers, hiking weather. Winter (December–March): Jigokudani snow monkeys at their most photogenic, Hakuba skiing, snow-covered post towns. Spring (April–May) brings cherry blossoms to Matsumoto Castle.

  • JR Pass Covers Most of This Route

The Azusa limited express (Tokyo–Matsumoto), Chuo Line, and Hokuriku Shinkansen (Nagano–Tokyo) are all JR Pass eligible. The Nagano Dentetsu (to Yudanaka) and Kamikochi bus are not included — budget ¥2,000–3,000 for these separately.

  • Kamikochi is Closed November–Late April

The valley closes for winter (usually Nov 15 – late April). Plan for summer or autumn foliage (October is stunning). All vehicles are prohibited; take the bus from Shin-Shimashima Station or from Matsumoto Bus Terminal.

  • Nagano Food Highlights

Shinshu soba (cold buckwheat noodles), basashi (horse sashimi), oyaki (stuffed buns with wild greens or pumpkin), nozawana pickles, Nagano apples and pears, matsutake mushroom (in season Oct), and Shinshu miso.

  • Winter Tip: Shibu Onsen Hotel Key Required

Shibu Onsen's 9 public baths (sotoyu) are accessible only to guests staying in the village's ryokan. You receive a wooden key at check-in. Book accommodation well in advance for winter (December–March) as it fills quickly.

  • Best Photo Spots

Matsumoto Castle at dawn (moat reflections), Kappa Bridge in Kamikochi (Hotaka peaks backdrop), Jigokudani monkeys in snow (January–February for deepest snow), Narai-juku main street at golden hour, Zenko-ji at dawn before crowds arrive.

Day-by-day

  1. Day 1

    Matsumoto: The Black Crow Castle

    Morning

Arrive in Matsumoto by limited express from Shinjuku (2.5 hrs) or shinkansen + transfer via Nagano. Head straight to Matsumoto Castle — one of Japan's 12 original feudal castles and arguably the most dramatic, with jet-black walls reflected in the moat. Book tickets online to avoid queues.

    Afternoon

Explore Nawate Street (the Frog Street) and Nakamachi — Matsumoto's well-preserved merchant quarter with Edo-era black-and-white kura (storehouse) buildings converted into cafes and craft shops. Visit the Japan Ukiyo-e Museum if interested in woodblock prints.

    Evening

Dinner in Matsumoto featuring local specialities: soba noodles (Nagano is Japan's top soba producer), horse meat sashimi (basashi — a regional delicacy), and Matsumoto miso. Pair with local Shinshu sake.

Train tokyo matsumoto (150 min)Azusa limited express from Shinjuku (2.5 hrs, ¥6,620 reserved). JR Pass covers this. Or shinkansen to Nagano then limited express Shinano to Matsumoto (2.5 hrs total).
  2. Day 2

Kamikochi — Japan's Most Beautiful Valley

    Morning

Take the early bus from Matsumoto to Kamikochi (1.5 hrs; private vehicles are banned — bus or taxi only). Arrive early to beat mist and crowds. Start at Kappa Bridge over the turquoise Azusa River with views of the Hotaka Range. The 2-hour Taisho Pond loop walk is essential.

    Afternoon

Hike from Kappa Bridge to Myojin Pond (3 km each way) — a sacred mountain lake ringed by forest with clear reflections of the peaks. Return by late afternoon for the bus back to Matsumoto. Alternatively, stay overnight at one of Kamikochi's mountain lodges for a magical early-morning experience.

    Evening

Return to Matsumoto for dinner, or if staying in Kamikochi, enjoy the serene mountain dining at your lodge (dinner is usually included in mountain lodge packages).

  3. Day 3

Narai-juku Post Town & Jigokudani Snow Monkeys

    Morning

Take a local train from Matsumoto to Narai Station (30 min). Narai-juku is Japan's longest preserved post town — 1 km of Edo-era wooden merchant houses lining the Nakasendo highway, frozen in the 18th century. Browse lacquerware shops (Narai is famous for kisokoma lacquer) and have soba for lunch.

    Afternoon

Continue by train via Matsumoto to Yudanaka Station (Nagano Dentetsu line), then a short bus ride to Jigokudani Monkey Park. Japanese macaques (snow monkeys) soak in the natural hot spring bath year-round — most photogenic in winter when snow covers the ground, but the monkeys are always there.

    Evening

Stay overnight in Yudanaka Onsen or Shibu Onsen — a beautiful historic hot-spring village where the narrow stone-paved alleys and wooden ryokan feel completely unchanged. The public baths (9 sotoyu) of Shibu Onsen require a guest key from your inn.

  4. Day 4

    Nagano City: Zenko-ji & Departure

    Morning

Travel from Yudanaka/Shibu to Nagano City (Nagano Dentetsu, 45 min). Visit Zenko-ji Temple — one of Japan's most important Buddhist temples, founded in 642 AD. The main hall contains the first Buddhist image brought to Japan (hidden from view — only a replica is shown). Walk the stone-paved Omotesando approach lined with traditional shops.

    Afternoon

Experience the Okaidan (inner sanctum corridor) at Zenko-ji — a pitch-dark underground passage where you feel your way along the wall to touch the 'key to paradise'. Then explore Nagano's shotengai (covered shopping arcade) for oyaki (stuffed buns) and Nagano apple products.

    Evening

Depart Nagano by shinkansen (Hokuriku or Nagano shinkansen to Tokyo, 80 min). Or extend into the Hakuba ski/hike area (40 min by bus) for more alpine time. Nagano to Tokyo by shinkansen is fast and scenic with views of the Alps receding behind you.

Shinkansen nagano tokyo (80 min)Hokuriku Shinkansen from Nagano to Tokyo (Asama/Kagayaki service, 80 min, ¥8,340 reserved). JR Pass covers this route.

FAQ

Can I visit Kamikochi in a day trip from Tokyo?
Technically yes but it's a very long day (5 hours travel each way). Better to overnight in Matsumoto and do Kamikochi as a day trip from there (1.5 hrs each way by bus). Stay 2 nights in Matsumoto if you want both Kamikochi and a relaxed Matsumoto city experience.
Is hiking in Kamikochi difficult?
The valley floor walks (Taisho Pond loop, Kappa Bridge to Myojin Pond) are flat, easy, and suitable for all fitness levels. Higher-altitude hikes towards Hotaka and Yari peaks are serious mountaineering requiring experience and proper gear. Most visitors stick to the flat valley routes.
What is the best base for exploring this region?
Matsumoto for days 1–2 (castle + Kamikochi). Yudanaka/Shibu Onsen for day 3 (snow monkeys + ryokan onsen experience). Nagano City for day 4 (Zenko-ji + shinkansen departure). This itinerary flows west to east, ending at the shinkansen hub.
