Frequently asked

What is the JR Pass?
The Japan Rail Pass is an unlimited-ride pass for the JR network — including most shinkansen, JR limited expresses, and JR local lines — sold to short-term foreign visitors. It comes in 7-, 14-, and 21-day flavors, and in Ordinary or Green (first-class) class.
Does it cover Nozomi and Mizuho?
No — and this is the calculator's whole reason for existing. The Nozomi (Tokaido/Sanyo Shinkansen) and Mizuho (Sanyo/Kyushu Shinkansen) are the fastest trains, and the basic JR Pass does not cover them. As of 2023 you can pay a supplemental fare to ride them, but for break-even math we count those segments as not eligible.
Where can I buy it?
Buy from the official site (japanrailpass.net) or an authorized reseller before your trip — they ship an exchange order you redeem at a JR ticket office in Japan. You can also now buy directly at major JR stations after arrival, at the same price.
Can foreigners buy it inside Japan?
Yes. The pass is sold to anyone visiting Japan on a 'Temporary Visitor' stamp (the standard tourist stamp issued at immigration). Bring your passport. Long-term residents — including those on work, student, or spouse visas — are not eligible.
